Overview

Xi'an, historically known as Chang'an, is the capital of Shaanxi Province and ranks first among China's Four Great Ancient Capitals. It served as the capital for 13 dynasties including the Western Zhou, Qin, Western Han, Sui, and Tang, with a history spanning over 1,100 years. Alongside Athens, Rome, and Cairo, Xi'an is recognized as one of the World's Four Great Ancient Capitals. It is a vital cradle of Chinese civilization and the starting point of the Silk Road. The city covers an area of approximately 10,752 square kilometers with a permanent population of around 13 million.

The Terracotta Army of Emperor Qin Shi Huang was accidentally discovered in 1974 by farmers digging a well and is hailed as the Eighth Wonder of the World. The three pits have yielded about 8,000 terracotta warriors, over 600 terracotta horses, and more than 130 chariots. Each warrior features a unique facial expression. In 1987, the Mausoleum of the First Qin Emperor and the Terracotta Army pits were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Xi'an is also the site of the Tang Dynasty's Chang'an city. During the peak of the Tang Dynasty, Chang'an had a population exceeding one million, making it the largest city in the world at that time. The Giant Wild Goose Pagoda was built in 652 AD under the supervision of the monk Xuanzang to house Buddhist scriptures brought back from India. It is one of China's earliest surviving brick pagodas. In 2014, the Giant Wild Goose Pagoda was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List as part of the Silk Roads.
