Overview
Xishuangbanna Dai Autonomous Prefecture is located at the southernmost tip of Yunnan Province, bordering Laos and Myanmar. It is China's only tropical rainforest nature reserve. The name "Xishuangbanna" comes from the Dai language, meaning "twelve thousand fields," referring to the historical administrative region composed of twelve Dai tribes. Situated south of the Tropic of Cancer, it enjoys a tropical monsoon climate with an average annual temperature of about 21°C, no frost year-round, making it one of the warmest places in China.
Xishuangbanna is one of China's most exotic tourist destinations. The dense tropical rainforests, unique stilted bamboo houses, resplendent Buddhist temples, and vibrant Dai ethnic costumes make visitors feel as if they are in a Southeast Asian country. However, Xishuangbanna is, in fact, an important part of China's diverse ethnic culture—the Dai people's water culture, Theravada Buddhist beliefs, and the tropical rainforest ecosystem are all precious natural and cultural heritages of China.

The Water-Splashing Festival is the most important and lively traditional festival of the Dai people and the grandest celebration in Xishuangbanna each year. The festival usually takes place from April 13th to 15th, lasting for three days. During the festival, people splash water on each other to convey blessings—water symbolizes purity and auspiciousness in Dai culture, and splashing water means bestowing blessings upon others. The entire city of Jinghong transforms into a massive water fight arena, where everyone, whether acquainted or not, joyfully plays with water guns and basins.
Dai architecture is characterized by bamboo houses. A bamboo house is a type of stilted pile-dwelling structure built with bamboo and wood. The elevated ground floor is used for storing farming tools or raising livestock, while the second floor serves as the living space. The design of the bamboo house is well-adapted to the tropical climate—the elevated ground floor provides ventilation and coolness, and the sloping roof facilitates drainage and rain protection.
