History

The history of Yangshuo's pastoral scenery is closely linked to the agricultural development history of the Guilin region. Since the Qin and Han dynasties, as Central Plains culture gradually spread southward, local ancestors reclaimed fields and built irrigation systems among the unique karst peak forest depressions, forming a rice cultivation culture that has lasted for millennia. The Yulong River was anciently called "Anle Shui" (Peaceful Water) and later got its current name from a legend about a dragon settling there. For thousands of years, its waters have nourished the fertile land on both banks. During the Ming and Qing dynasties, Yangshuo served as an important node on the trade route between Guangdong and Guangxi. Some villages, like Jiuxian Village, still preserve ancient mansions from that era, adding profound historical and cultural depth to the pastoral scenery.
