Yangtze River
Synopsis
The Yangtze River is the largest river in China, the longest river in Asia, and the third-longest river in the world, with a total length of approximately 6,300 kilometers and a drainage area of 1.8085 million square kilometers. About 460 million people live within its basin. Originating from the Tanggula Mountains on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, it flows from west to east across China and empties into the East China Sea. It is one of the cradles of Chinese civilization.
Overview
The Yangtze River (English: Yangtze River), historically known as Jiang or Da Jiang, is the longest river in China, the longest river in Asia, and the third longest river in the world, after Africa's Nile River and South America's Amazon River. The Yangtze River is approximately 6,300 kilometers long, with a drainage area of about 1.8085 million square kilometers, accounting for nearly one-fifth of China's land area. Its annual runoff is about 951.3 billion cubic meters, with a flow rate of approximately 31,000 cubic meters per second. The Yangtze originates from the Tanggula Mountains on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, flows eastward across China, traversing 11 provincial-level administrative regions: Qinghai, Tibet, Sichuan, Yunnan, Chongqing, Hubei, Hunan, Jiangxi, Anhui, Jiangsu, and Shanghai, before finally emptying into the East China Sea.
The Yangtze River Basin is one of the important cradles of Chinese civilization, nurturing diverse regional cultures such as the Ba-Shu culture, Jing-Chu culture, and Wu-Yue culture. The basin is home to approximately 460 million people, accounting for about one-third of the national population, making it one of China's most economically active and densely populated regions. The GDP of the Yangtze River Economic Belt accounts for about 46% of the national total, earning it the title of China's "Golden Waterway."

Iconic Landscapes
Three Gorges
The Yangtze Three Gorges (Qutang Gorge, Wu Gorge, Xiling Gorge) are the most magnificent section of the Yangtze River, stretching from Baidicheng in Fengjie, Chongqing in the west to Nanjinguan in Yichang, Hubei in the east, with a total length of about 193 kilometers. The steep cliffs and turbulent waters on both sides of the Three Gorges have made it one of China's most famous natural landscapes since ancient times. The Tang Dynasty poet Li Bai left the timeless verse: "The monkeys' cries on both banks never cease, / While my light boat has passed ten thousand folds of hills."

The Yangtze and Chinese Civilization
The Yangtze River, along with the Yellow River, is known as one of the two great cradles of Chinese civilization. The Yangtze Basin has nurtured a rich cultural heritage: the Hemudu culture (about 7,000 years ago) proves that the Yangtze Basin is one of the origins of rice agriculture in the world; the Sanxingdui site showcases the brilliance of the ancient Shu civilization in the upper reaches of the Yangtze; Chu culture, represented by Qu Yuan and the "Songs of Chu," profoundly influenced the history of Chinese literature.
The Yangtze is also an important image in Chinese poetry. Poets such as Li Bai, Du Fu, and Su Shi left countless classic poems about the Yangtze. Li Bai's "The lone sail's distant shadow vanishes in the azure void, / Only the Yangtze's flow is seen at the sky's end," Du Fu's "Stars hang low over the vast plain, / The moon surges as the great river flows," and Su Shi's "The great river flows eastward, / Its waves have swept away all the gallant heroes of history" are all treasures of Chinese culture.
