Overview

Mount Huangshan, located in southern Anhui Province, China, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site for both culture and nature. It is renowned as "the most fantastic mountain under heaven," with a saying that goes, "After visiting the Five Great Mountains, one thinks no other mountain is worth seeing; after returning from Mount Huangshan, one thinks even the Five Great Mountains are not worth seeing." Among its many spectacular landscapes, the "Sunrise on Mount Huangshan" is undoubtedly one of the most magnificent and captivating wonders. When the first rays of dawn pierce the sea of clouds, bathing the uniquely shaped pines and bizarre rocks in golden light, the overwhelming yet serene spectacle is something words and pictures can hardly fully convey. Witnessing the sunrise on Mount Huangshan is not just a visual feast but also a spiritual baptism, a dialogue with heaven, earth, and nature.

History

As a natural spectacle, the history of viewing the sunrise on Mount Huangshan is closely linked to the mountain's development. Mount Huangshan was anciently called "Yishan" and was later renamed "Huangshan" (Yellow Mountain) based on the legend that the Yellow Emperor (Huangdi) once practiced alchemy here. Since the Tang Dynasty, literati and artists such as Li Bai, Jia Dao, and Xu Xiake have visited, leaving behind numerous poems and travelogues praising its beauty. The Ming Dynasty geographer Xu Xiake visited Mount Huangshan twice and exclaimed, "Among all the famous mountains within and beyond the seas, none compares to Huangshan of Huizhou," greatly enhancing its fame. With the construction of mountain paths and temples (such as Ciguang Pavilion and Yungu Temple), ascending to the summit to watch the sunrise gradually became a classic activity for scholars and travelers. In modern times, with the continuous improvement of tourism facilities, fixed sunrise viewing points have been established at locations like Bright Summit, Lion Peak, Danxia Peak, Shixin Peak, and Aoyu Peak, allowing this natural wonder to be appreciated and recorded by more people.

Main Attractions (Sunrise Viewing Points)

Mount Huangshan boasts several excellent sunrise viewing points, each with its own characteristics:
1. Bright Summit (Guangming Ding): The second highest peak of Mount Huangshan at 1,860 meters. Its high, open, and expansive terrain makes it the most classic and popular platform for viewing both the sunrise and the sea of clouds. The unobstructed view allows one to see the silhouettes of main peaks like Tiandu Peak and Lotus Peak against the rising sun.
2. Lion Peak (Lion Peak) / Qingliang Terrace (Cooling Terrace): Located in the North Sea Scenic Area, it is one of the traditional "best sunrise viewing spots" on Mount Huangshan. Qingliang Terrace protrudes from a precarious cliff face on three sides. Watching the sunrise here often features foreground elements like uniquely shaped pines (e.g., the stone monkey at "Monkey Gazing at the Sea"), creating a scene with extremely rich layers.
3. Danxia Peak: Situated at the northern end of the West Sea Grand Canyon, it is relatively less crowded and offers a tranquil environment. Viewing the sunrise here provides a bird's-eye view of the magnificent peaks of the West Sea and the deep canyon. The sunrise light interacts beautifully with the forest of stone pillars and peaks, creating a dazzling display of colors.
4. Shixin Peak (Beginning-to-Believe Peak): Named for the phrase "Only upon reaching Shixin Peak does one begin to believe how fantastic Mount Huangshan is." Although the summit area is small, the view is excellent, offering a distant view of Sanhua Wu (Flower Scattering Basin) and Shisun Peak (Stone Bamboo Shoot Peak) in the North Sea area. At sunrise, the distinct outlines of the uniquely shaped pines and bizarre rocks in the morning light possess a unique charm.
5. Aoyu Peak (Turtle Fish Peak): The peak resembles a giant turtle-fish. Watching the sunrise here allows one to face the rising sun coming from the direction of the East Sea directly, with famous bizarre rocks like "Turtle Fish Carrying a Golden Turtle" in the foreground, creating a grand spectacle.
