It is China's first national forest park, established in 1982. The park is renowned worldwide for its unique quartz sandstone peak forest landform, featuring thousands of towering stone pillars of various shapes that resemble a fairyland amidst swirling clouds and mist. In 1992, the Wulingyuan Scenic and Historic Interest Area, with Zhangjiajie National Forest Park at its core, was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The park boasts high forest coverage and fresh air, integrating spectacular peaks, secluded valleys, beautiful waters, karst caves, and forests into a comprehensive natural landscape. Praised as a "miniature fairyland and a magnified bonsai," it is an exceptional destination for exploring natural wonders and experiencing eco-tourism.
History
The geological history of the Zhangjiajie area dates back to the Devonian period 380 million years ago when it was a sea that deposited thick layers of quartz sandstone. Through prolonged tectonic movements, particularly intense uplift, fluvial erosion, and gravitational collapse since the Neogene period, the magnificent peak forest landscape seen today was ultimately formed. In terms of human history, this area was historically part of Qianzhong and was originally named "Qingyan Mountain." Due to its remote location, its beauty remained largely unknown, "hidden away in the inner chambers." It wasn't until the late 1970s that the famous painter Wu Guanzhong visited for sketching and subsequently published an article titled "Hidden Away in the Inner Chambers – The Lost Scenic Pearl," bringing Zhangjiajie's extraordinary scenery into the public eye. In 1982, the State Council approved the establishment of Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, marking the beginning of its journey as a world-class tourist destination.
Main Attractions
The park covers an area of approximately 4,810 hectares with numerous attractions. The core landscapes are concentrated in areas such as Huangshi Village, Golden Whip Stream, Yuanjiajie, Yangjiajie, and Tianzi Mountain.
- Huangshi Village: It is often said, "A trip to Zhangjiajie is not complete without visiting Huangshi Village." This area offers an excellent viewing platform for panoramic views of the peak forest. A circular walk around the village allows visitors to appreciate spectacular peaks like "South Sky Pillar" and "Sea-Calming Needle."
- Golden Whip Stream: A meandering stream winding through peaks and valleys, approximately 7.5 kilometers long. The path is lined with lush forests and clear water, earning it a reputation as one of "the world's most beautiful canyons." Famous sights include "Golden Whip Rock," "Divine Eagle Protecting the Whip," and "Meeting from Afar."
- Yuanjiajie: The prototype for the "Hallelujah Mountains" in the movie Avatar is located here. The "Number One Bridge Under Heaven" within the area is a naturally formed stone bridge spanning two mountains, imposing and magnificent. "Lost Soul Terrace" is one of the best spots to appreciate the majestic grandeur of the sandstone peak forest.
- Yangjiajie: Known for its perilous peak wall landscapes, such as "Black Dragon Village" and "Tianbo Mansion." The paths here are relatively steep, offering a sense of primitive wilderness.
- Tianzi Mountain: Famous for its expansive vistas and rich folk legends. Attractions like "Imperial Brush Peaks," "Fairy Presenting Flowers," and "West Sea Stone Forest" resemble huge landscape paintings. He Long Park is also situated here.
- Ten-Mile Gallery: Located in the Suoxi Valley scenic area, it is a canyon about 5.8 kilometers long. Spectacular peaks line both sides with diverse shapes. Visitors can take a sightseeing train or hike through it, feeling as if they are strolling through an art gallery.

Visitors typically enter by purchasing the Wulingyuan Core Scenic Area main ticket, which includes access to Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, Tianzi Mountain, Yuanjiajie, Yangjiajie, Suoxi Valley, and other areas, as well as the environmental protection bus service within the scenic area.
