Overview

Zhangjiajie, located in the northwestern part of Hunan Province, is one of China's most breathtaking natural landscapes. It is home to a UNESCO World Natural Heritage site, a UNESCO Global Geopark, and China's first national forest park. Zhangjiajie is renowned worldwide for its unique quartz sandstone peak forest landform, where thousands of sandstone pillars rise abruptly from the ground, piercing the sky like masterpieces of nature's craftsmanship. The prototype for the floating Hallelujah Mountains in the movie Avatar is Zhangjiajie's "South Sky Pillar" (now renamed Hallelujah Mountain), which has brought global fame to the region.

The Zhangjiajie scenic area primarily consists of three core attractions: Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, Tianmen Mountain National Forest Park, and Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon. Among these, Tianmen Mountain is famous for its thrilling glass walkway, the spectacular Tianmen Cave, and Asia's longest high-mountain passenger cableway, making it one of China's most popular tourist destinations in recent years.

Core Scenic Areas

Scenic Area Highlights
Zhangjiajie National Forest Park Quartz sandstone peak forest, Avatar filming location, Huangshi Village, Golden Whip Stream
Tianmen Mountain National Forest Park Tianmen Cave, Glass Walkway, 99-Bend Road to Heaven, High-Mountain Cableway
Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon Yuntiandu Glass Bridge, the world's highest and longest glass bridge

Tianmen Mountain is the most thrilling scenic area in Zhangjiajie. Tianmen Cave is the world's highest-altitude natural karst mountain-penetrating cave, with an opening 131.5 meters high and 57 meters wide, resembling a gateway to the heavens. In 1999, a Russian stunt pilot flew an aircraft through Tianmen Cave, creating a remarkable feat in human aviation history. The Road to Heaven leading to Tianmen Cave features 99 bends, winding along steep cliffs and is hailed as the world's most spectacular road.

The Tianmen Mountain Glass Walkway is suspended on cliffs at an altitude of approximately 1,400 meters, with a total length of about 1,600 meters, of which roughly 60 meters are transparent glass. Standing on the glass and looking down at the abyss below is both thrilling and offers magnificent mountain views. The Panlong Cliff Glass Walkway is another, even more perilous glass walkway built on an almost vertical cliff face, guaranteed to get your adrenaline pumping.

The Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon Glass Bridge, Yuntiandu, spans the canyon with a deck entirely made of transparent glass. With a main span of 430 meters and a deck about 300 meters above the canyon floor, it was once the world's highest and longest glass bridge. Walking on the completely transparent deck with a sheer drop beneath is jokingly called the "Bridge of the Brave" by visitors.

Cultural Significance

Zhangjiajie's quartz sandstone peak forest landform is unique in the world. This landform originated over 300 million years ago during the Devonian period when the area was a vast ocean, accumulating over 500 meters of quartz sandstone on the seabed. Through prolonged tectonic uplift and erosion by flowing water, the thousands of sandstone pillars seen today were eventually formed. In 2010, the Zhangjiajie Sandstone Peak Forest landform was officially named "Zhangjiajie Landform" by the International Association of Geomorphologists, making it the only landform type in the world named after a Chinese location.

Zhangjiajie has also been a significant source of inspiration for film and literature. In addition to Avatar, numerous films and TV series such as Journey to the West and Monster Hunt were filmed here. The renowned painter Wu Guanzhong visited Zhangjiajie for sketching in 1979 and was deeply awed by its beauty. He subsequently published an article in the Hunan Daily, introducing this hidden gem to the outside world for the first time. It can be said that Wu Guanzhong played a pivotal role in bringing Zhangjiajie to global attention.
