Overview

The Zhangye Danxia landform is located in Linze County and Sunan Yugur Autonomous County of Zhangye City, Gansu Province, China. It is one of the most typical, richly shaped, and most colorful Danxia landform groups in the arid regions of northern China. It is not a single scenic area in the traditional sense, but a vast landscape belt composed of multiple independent scenic areas, with the Zhangye Danxia National Geopark (also known as the Colorful Danxia) and the Binggou Danxia being the most famous. Renowned for its interlaced bedding, majestic momentum, and colorful hilly terrain, it is hailed as one of the "Ten Most Magical Geographical Wonders of the World" and a shining pearl on the golden Silk Road tourism route. Its斑斓 colors originate from red sandstone and conglomerate deposited during the Cretaceous period. After millions of years of geological movement, water erosion, and wind denudation, it has ultimately formed the magnificent landscape we see today, described as "colors like rich cinnabar, brilliance like bright rosy clouds."

History

The formation history of the Zhangye Danxia landform can be traced back to the Cretaceous period, approximately 135 to 65 million years ago. At that time, this area was a vast inland basin with a hot and dry climate. A large amount of detrital material (such as iron, manganese, and other minerals) weathered and eroded from the surrounding mountains was transported by rivers and deposited here, forming rock layers dominated by red sandstone and conglomerate. Over the subsequent long ages, the earth's crust uplifted, exposing the rock layers. Under arid and semi-arid climatic conditions, relying mainly on seasonal rainstorms for冲刷 and wind for打磨, the rock layers were continuously eroded, cut, and剥离, ultimately shaping the myriad of奇特 landscapes we see today, such as castle-like, pagoda-like, columnar, and peak forest formations. Its scientific and aesthetic value was only widely recognized in modern times. In 2005, it was selected by Chinese National Geography magazine as one of the "Seven Most Beautiful Danxia in China." In 2011, it was approved as a national geopark, attracting the attention of global geologists and tourists.

Main Attractions

The Zhangye Danxia landform area is vast, mainly divided into two core touring areas, each with its own characteristics:

  1. Colorful Danxia Scenic Area (Zhangye Danxia National Geopark): This is the essence of Zhangye Danxia, famous for its艳丽 colors. Under sunlight, the mountains display a variety of鲜艳 colors such as red, yellow, orange, green, white, gray-black, and gray-white, resembling a slanted colorful cloth with distinct lines,绚丽夺目. The main viewing platforms are "Colorful Fairyland Terrace," "Colorful Sea of Clouds Terrace," "Colorful Brocade Terrace," and "Colorful Rainbow Glow Terrace." Among them, "Rainbow Glow Terrace" is the best spot for watching the sunset, where the evening glow cloaks the Danxia in gold, creating the most震撼 scenery.

  2. Binggou Danxia Scenic Area: Unlike the "color" beauty of the Colorful Danxia, Binggou Danxia excels in "form." The landform here is renowned for its majestic,险峻, and神奇 features, with extremely rich shapes like palace-style, window-lattice状, and Roman column状. It is hailed as the "typical representative of window-lattice palace-style Danxia landform." Attractions within the scenic area such as "Louvre Phantom," "Sacred Camel Welcoming Guests," and "Root of the Earth" have逼真 shapes and恢宏气势, showcasing the masculine and雄伟 aspects of Danxia landforms. Binggou Danxia has relatively fewer tourists and is more suitable for visitors who enjoy geological wonders and a tranquil environment for in-depth exploration.
