Overview
Yueyang Tower, situated atop the ancient city wall at the West Gate of Yueyang City in Hunan Province, China, overlooks the vast Dongting Lake and faces the verdant Junshan Mountain in the distance. It has long been celebrated as "the finest lake under heaven is Dongting, the finest tower under heaven is Yueyang." Alongside the Yellow Crane Tower in Wuhan, Hubei, and the Tengwang Pavilion in Nanchang, Jiangxi, it is known as one of the "Three Great Towers of Jiangnan" and stands as a cultural landmark of China. Yueyang Tower is not only an exquisitely crafted ancient wooden structure but also carries profound cultural significance due to the timeless literary masterpiece Memorial to Yueyang Tower by the Northern Song Dynasty writer Fan Zhongyan. It has become a sacred site where literati throughout the ages have ascended to chant poems and express their sentiments for home and country. From the tower, one can take in the panoramic view of the misty, boundless expanse of the eight-hundred-li Dongting Lake, personally experiencing the broad-minded sentiment of "being the first to worry about the world's troubles and the last to enjoy its happiness."
History
The history of Yueyang Tower can be traced back to the late Eastern Han Dynasty. Historical records indicate that in the 20th year of the Jian'an era (215 AD) during the Eastern Han, the Eastern Wu general Lu Su trained his navy on Dongting Lake and built a "Yuejun Tower" (Tower for Reviewing Troops), which served as the precursor to Yueyang Tower. By the Tang Dynasty, Yueyang Tower had taken initial shape and became a place where exiled officials and poets ascended to compose poetry. Great poets like Li Bai, Du Fu, and Bai Juyi all left immortal verses here. In the fourth year of the Qingli era (1044 AD) of the Northern Song Dynasty, Teng Zijing, who was demoted to govern Baling Commandery, oversaw a major renovation of Yueyang Tower and invited his friend Fan Zhongyan to write a commemorative piece. Based on the scenery and using it as a theme for elaboration, Fan Zhongyan penned the timeless Memorial to Yueyang Tower. From then on, the tower's fame spread far and wide through the essay. Over the following millennium, the tower was repeatedly destroyed and rebuilt. The current structure was rebuilt in the sixth year of the Guangxu era (1880) of the Qing Dynasty. In 1983, a major dismantling and restoration was carried out following the principle of "repairing the old as it was," and it reopened to the public in 1984.
Main Attractions
- Main Tower: A pure wooden structure with three stories, four pillars, upturned eaves, and a helmet-shaped roof. The tower is 19.42 meters high, constructed without a single nail or rivet, relying solely on interlocking wooden components, showcasing the superb architectural craftsmanship of ancient China. The roof is covered with yellow glazed tiles, shaped like an ancient general's helmet, presenting a majestic appearance.
- Carved Screen of Memorial to Yueyang Tower: A carved screen of Memorial to Yueyang Tower is displayed on both the first and second floors of the tower. The one on the first floor, carved on rosewood, features the calligraphy of the Qing Dynasty calligrapher Zhang Zhao from the Qianlong era. Its vigorous brushstrokes make it a treasure of the tower. The one on the second floor is a replica.
- Immortal Plum Pavilion and Three Drunkards Pavilion: Flanking the main tower are two auxiliary pavilions. The left one is the "Immortal Plum Pavilion," named after a stone slab with withered plum blossom patterns reportedly discovered during Ming Dynasty repairs. The right one is the "Three Drunkards Pavilion," originating from the legend of the Taoist immortal Lü Dongbin getting "drunk three times at Yueyang Tower."
- Huai Fu Pavilion: Located southeast of the tower complex, it was built in memory of the Tang Dynasty poet Du Fu. Du Fu drifted to Yueyang in his later years, leaving behind famous works like Climbing Yueyang Tower, in which the line "Wu and Chu to the southeast split, heaven and earth float day and night" became an unparalleled depiction of Dongting Lake.
- Yueyang Gate Ancient City Wall: Yueyang Tower sits atop a well-preserved section of the ancient city wall. Visitors can stroll along the wall to experience the ancient city's ambiance and enjoy views of Dongting Lake from different angles.
