This film marked Ang Lee's return to challenging sensitive subject matter following Brokeback Mountain, stunning the international film world with its bold emotional expression and masterful narrative technique.

Plot Summary

In 1938, Lingnan University relocates to Hong Kong due to the war. Patriotic youth Kuang Yumin (played by Wang Leehom) organizes a drama society as a cover to plot the assassination of Mr. Yee, the intelligence chief of the Wang Jingwei regime. The beautiful and intelligent student Wang Jiazhi is chosen to carry out the "honey trap" operation, transforming into the elegant Mrs. Mai to gradually get close to Mr. Yee and his wife (played by Joan Chen). To make the plan credible, Wang Jiazhi even sacrifices her virginity.

Three years later, the operation moves to Shanghai. Wang Jiazhi once again infiltrates the Yees' social circle as Mrs. Mai, engaging in a dangerous and lust-filled clandestine relationship with Mr. Yee. At the final moment when the assassination is about to succeed, in a jewelry store, Wang Jiazhi sees the diamond ring Mr. Yee has chosen for her. Overwhelmed by complex emotions, she whispers three words that change their fates. This moment of hesitation alters everyone's destiny irrevocably.

Controversy & Censorship

Lust, Caution has sparked widespread controversy and discussion since its release, becoming one of the most contentious works in Chinese-language film history.

Mainland China Censorship: The version released in Mainland China was cut by approximately 7 minutes compared to the original, primarily involving three bold love scenes. In addition to visual cuts, some dialogue was altered to diminish the emotional depth of the characters. Despite these cuts, the edited version still generated significant social反响.

Tang Wei Blacklisting Incident: In early 2008, China's State Administration of Radio, Film, and Television (SARFT) imposed a comprehensive blacklist on lead actress Tang Wei. All advertisements featuring her were pulled, and her new projects could not be released in Mainland China. The blacklisting lasted about two years, with restrictions gradually lifted starting in 2010. This incident sparked international discussion on freedom of speech and artistic expression. In contrast, director Ang Lee and lead actor Tony Leung Chiu-wai were unaffected.

Source Material Controversy: The film is adapted from Eileen Chang's short story, which itself is based on the real historical event of Zheng Pingru's assassination attempt on Ding Mocun. Zheng Pingru's family publicly expressed dissatisfaction, believing the film distorted the image of the historical figure.

International Rating Controversy: The Motion Picture Association (MPAA) gave the film an NC-17 rating (no one 17 and under admitted), which limited its distribution and promotional channels in the United States. However, director Ang Lee insisted on preserving the完整版本, refusing to compromise artistic expression for commercial gain.

Source Material & Adaptation

The film is adapted from Eileen Chang's同名短篇小说 written in the 1950s. Chang based her story on the real historical event of Zheng Pingru's assassination attempt on Ding Mocun during the war. She revised it repeatedly over decades before finally publishing it in Taiwan's China Times in 1978. The story, written with extreme restraint, depicts the conflict between personal emotion and national duty during war and is widely regarded by the literary world as one of Chang's finest short works.

In the adaptation process, Ang Lee significantly expanded upon the story's implied content, developing the less-than-20,000-word短篇小说 into a nearly three-hour epic film. Screenwriters Wang Hui-ling and James Schamus collaborated on the script, remaining faithful to the spirit of the original while赋予人物更丰富的层次和更深刻的情感内涵.

Cultural Impact

Lust, Caution has had a profound impact on the international film community. Winning the Venice Golden Lion further solidified Ang Lee's status as a world-class director and earned Chinese-language cinema greater attention and respect on the global stage. Tang Wei rose to fame with this film. Despite experiencing the低谷 of the blacklisting, she later grew into an internationally renowned actress of substance through works like Late Autumn, Finding Mr. Right, and Decision to Leave.

The film's profound exploration of human complexity against the backdrop of war, its细腻刻画 of female psychology, and its bold portrayal of the relationship between lust and power have made it a经典文本持续关注 by film scholars and critics. In 2022, Decision to Leave, a film starring Tang Wei directed by Korean director Park Chan-wook, won the Best Director award at the Cannes Film Festival, once again prompting回顾与讨论 of Lust, Caution.
