Overview

"Return to Dust" is a 2022 Chinese art-house film written and directed by Li Ruijun, starring Hai Qing and Wu Renlin. Set in the rural countryside of Gansu Province in northwest China, the film tells the heartwarming story of two marginalized farmers, Ma Youtie and Cao Guiying, who are abandoned by their respective families. Arranged into a marriage, they progress from strangers to soulmates, supporting each other and building a home together. The film holds a Douban rating of 8.4, making it the highest-rated domestic theatrical release on Douban in 2022.

This film created a remarkable chapter in Chinese cinema history. With a production cost of only about 2 million RMB and a modest opening day box office of 360,000 RMB, it staged a stunning comeback driven by overwhelmingly positive word-of-mouth, ultimately grossing over 104 million RMB. This achievement made it a miracle, becoming a Chinese art film that broke the 100 million RMB box office barrier. The film was selected for the main competition of the 72nd Berlin International Film Festival, marking the first Chinese-language film to enter the main competition of one of Europe's three major film festivals since 2019.

Plot

Ma Youtie (played by Wu Renlin) is a poor farmer in rural Gansu, simple and honest, living with his elder brother and sister-in-law, with only a donkey for company. Cao Guiying (played by Hai Qing) has suffered from an illness since childhood, which limits her mobility and leaves her unable to bear children. She is seen as a burden by her brother and sister-in-law. The two families arrange for these two unwanted individuals to be paired together.

Ma Youtie and Cao Guiying's wedding has no ceremony—no wedding dress, no celebratory feast, no blessings. But after marriage, the two lonely souls find each other. They raise chickens, farm the land, and build a house together, constructing their own small home brick by brick with mud. Sowing in spring, harvesting in summer, threshing in autumn—they toil diligently on the land. Their life, though impoverished, is filled with warmth and hope.

However, fate ultimately does not favor this unfortunate couple. The film's ending is heartbreaking—Guiying accidentally drowns, and after losing the only light in his life, Youtie chooses release. The earthen house they built with their own hands is bulldozed flat, everything fading into dust and smoke.

Cast

Actor Character Introduction
Hai Qing Cao Guiying A disabled rural woman, looked down upon by her family
Wu Renlin Ma Youtie A simple, honest farmer; non-professional actor

Wu Renlin is director Li Ruijun's uncle, a genuine farmer from Gansu who had never acted in a film before. His performance shows no trace of acting—because what he does on screen is what he does every day in real life: driving a donkey, farming, building houses, threshing grain. This natural performance lends the character Ma Youtie a stunning authenticity.

Hai Qing is a renowned Chinese actress who made tremendous efforts for this role—appearing without makeup, learning the northwestern dialect, and mimicking the gait and gestures of a disabled person. Her performance is subtle and nuanced, movingly portraying Cao Guiying, a humble yet vibrant woman.

The box office comeback of "Return to Dust" is one of the most touching stories in the Chinese film market. Initially, the film had extremely low screen share, and many people were unaware of its existence. However, as positive word-of-mouth spread among viewers, its screen share and box office climbed day by day. From 360,000 to 100 million, this film conquered audiences purely through its quality.

Director Li Ruijun

Li Ruijun is one of China's most dedicated directors to rural themes. Born in Gaotai, Gansu, all his films are set in his hometown's countryside. "Return to Dust" is his sixth feature film. He uses his hometown and his own relatives (his uncle Wu Renlin) to tell the most authentic stories of Chinese farmers' lives. Although his works are not commercially successful, each is filled with deep affection for the land and its people.

Cultural Significance

"Return to Dust" shows urban audiences the most authentic side of rural China—not a romanticized pastoral idyll, nor a deliberately exaggerated portrayal of poverty, but the living conditions of ordinary farmers on the land. One line from Ma Youtie moved countless viewers to tears: "What can the wheat say to the sickle? What can the wheat say to the sparrows pecking at it?" This stoic acceptance of fate speaks to the deepest survival philosophy of Chinese farmers over thousands of years.
