Overview

"Happy Together" is a 1997 Hong Kong romantic drama film directed by Wong Kar-wai. It stars Leslie Cheung and Tony Leung Chiu-wai, with Chang Chen in a supporting role. The film is a co-production between Hong Kong, China, Japan, and South Korea. It features dialogue in Cantonese, Mandarin, and Spanish, has a runtime of 96 minutes, and holds a high rating of 9.0 on Douban. Wong Kar-wai won the Best Director award at the 50th Cannes Film Festival for this film, becoming the first Chinese director to receive this honor, marking a milestone for Chinese-language cinema in the international art film arena.

The film tells the story of a gay couple, Lai Yiu-fai (Tony Leung Chiu-wai) and Ho Po-wing (Leslie Cheung), who travel to Argentina. They initially dream of visiting the magnificent Iguazu Falls but lose their way in Buenos Aires. Life in a foreign land, financial hardship, and the tumultuous nature of their relationship wear them down through repeated arguments and reconciliations. With his highly personal visual language, Wong Kar-wai films this love story full of loneliness and longing like a poetic painting.

Plot

Lai Yiu-fai and Ho Po-wing are a gay couple from Hong Kong. Hoping for a fresh start, they leave Hong Kong and travel across the ocean to Argentina. They originally planned to see South America's most spectacular sight, the Iguazu Falls, but end up stranded in Buenos Aires after getting lost and facing financial difficulties.

Ho Po-wing is a capricious yet charming individual. He is accustomed to Lai Yiu-fai's care but repeatedly hurts him. Their relationship resembles an endless cycle—every time Ho Po-wing says, "Let's start over," Lai Yiu-fai cannot refuse. They break up and reconcile in small Buenos Aires hotels, embrace and spin in tango bars, and walk silently on late-night streets.

Lai Yiu-fai works as a waiter in a tango bar, while Ho Po-wing drifts around the streets. After a quarrel, Ho Po-wing leaves but later returns, injured, seeking Lai Yiu-fai's care. Although Lai Yiu-fai verbally claims he won't forgive him, he silently takes Ho Po-wing back each time. However, once trust is broken, it's hard to rebuild, and their relationship ultimately heads towards an irreparable end.

Another important character in the film is Chang (Chang Chen), a young man from Taiwan. His appearance brings a glimmer of warmth and hope to Lai Yiu-fai's life. Chang plans to go to Ushuaia, the end of the world, to leave his voice there. This character symbolizes new possibilities and the courage to move beyond the past.

Cultural Impact

"Happy Together" is one of the most poetic works in Wong Kar-wai's career and a milestone for Chinese-language LGBTQ+ cinema. Wong Kar-wai's Best Director win at the Cannes Film Festival signified the highest level of international recognition for Chinese art-house filmmaking.

The film's visual style is textbook-level. Cinematographer Christopher Doyle uses grainy, out-of-focus shots to portray Buenos Aires as a world filled with nostalgia and loneliness. The alternation between black-and-white and color sequences hints at the interweaving of memory and reality. The dim lights of the tango bar, the entangled figures in the cramped hotel rooms, and the solitary silhouettes on empty streets—each frame resembles a meticulously composed photograph.

The performances by Leslie Cheung and Tony Leung Chiu-wai are considered among the finest on-screen pairings in Chinese film history. Leslie Cheung masterfully portrays Ho Po-wing's vulnerability within capriciousness and deep affection within recklessness. Tony Leung Chiu-wai, with immense restraint, presents the silent intensity of Lai Yiu-fai—his eyes speak volumes without uttering a word. Their scene in the tango bar, devoid of dialogue and relying solely on body language, surpasses any spoken lines.

The recurring image of the Iguazu Falls lamp in the film is an extremely poignant symbol. That small waterfall lamp represents their unfulfilled dream and a缩影 of the past they can never return to. As the film expresses, some people are destined to pass through each other's lives only briefly, leaving behind nothing but a fleeting memory of a "happy together" moment.
