Overview

Nam Co, meaning "Heavenly Lake" in Tibetan, is located in the central part of the Tibet Autonomous Region of China, at the border between Damxung County of Lhasa City and Baingoin County of Nagqu City. It is the second largest lake in Tibet and the third largest saltwater lake in China. The lake surface sits at an altitude of 4,718 meters, stretching about 70 kilometers from east to west and 30 kilometers from north to south, covering an area of approximately 1,920 square kilometers. As one of Tibet's "Three Great Holy Lakes" (the other two being Lake Manasarovar and Yamdrok Lake), Nam Co holds an extremely sacred status in Tibetan Buddhism. It is considered the mandala of the deity Chakrasamvara and is a holy land in the hearts of countless devotees. Its deep blue, clear waters, set against the snowy peaks of the distant Nyenchen Tanglha Mountains, create one of the most awe-inspiring natural and cultural landscapes on the Tibetan Plateau, making it a must-visit destination for travelers to Tibet.

History

The formation of Nam Co is closely related to the geological uplift of the Tibetan Plateau, making it a typical tectonic rift lake. Its history is deeply intertwined with Tibetan Buddhist culture. In ancient Bon legends, Nam Co is the first holy lake of the Yungdrung Bon tradition. After the introduction of Buddhism, it was endowed with new religious significance. Legend has it that Nam Co is the daughter of the deity Indra, married to the mountain god of the Nyenchen Tanglha range on its northern shore. The two accompany and guard each other, forming Tibet's most famous sacred mountain and holy lake pair. Every Tibetan Sheep Year, following the tradition of "circumambulating the mountain in the Horse Year and the lake in the Sheep Year," a large number of pilgrims come to perform the kora (circumambulation) around the lake, believing that merits are multiplied during this time. Historically, many eminent monks and masters have practiced meditation by the lake, leaving behind numerous sacred sites, making Nam Co not only a natural wonder but also a spiritual and cultural sanctuary.

Main Attractions

  1. Tashi Peninsula: Located on the southeastern shore of Nam Co, this is the main tourist area. The peninsula features two iconic prayer stone formations known as the "Heavenly Gate Stones," symbols of Nam Co. Tashi Monastery is also located here for worship. It is one of the best spots to view the lake scenery and the reflection of the Nyenchen Tanglha Mountains.
  2. Holy Elephant Heavenly Gate (Sheng Xiang Tian Men): Located on the northern shore of Nam Co, this is a naturally formed giant rock resembling a holy elephant, with its trunk extending into the lake as if drinking water, creating a spectacular and mystical sight. From here, the winding shoreline and distant snow-capped mountains form a breathtaking picture. It has become a popular photography spot in recent years (Note: The road to Holy Elephant Heavenly Gate is relatively complex, and the scenic area's opening status is subject to change; verify before your trip).
  3. Nyenchen Tanglha Mountain Viewing Platform: Located beside the Qinghai-Tibet Highway on the way to Nam Co, this viewing platform offers a distant view of the majestic main peak of the Nyenchen Tanglha Mountains (7,162 meters). It is the best vantage point to understand the interdependent relationship between the "sacred mountain and holy lake."
  4. Welcoming Stones and Prayer Stones: Located on Tashi Peninsula, these are famous landmarks of Nam Co. Two large stones stand facing each other, regarded as the door guardians of Nam Co. Devotees often offer khata scarves here.
  5. Lake Circumambulation Route: Devout pilgrims walk the kora around the lake, a full circuit of approximately 320-340 kilometers, usually taking over half a month. The route passes through grasslands, wetlands, and cliffs, offering an experience of pristine natural scenery and a profound religious atmosphere.
