Overview

Fenghuang Ancient Town is located in the southwest of Xiangxi Tujia and Miao Autonomous Prefecture in Hunan Province, under the jurisdiction of Fenghuang County. Hailed as one of "China's Most Beautiful Small Towns," it nestles beside the Tuojiang River, surrounded by rolling hills. It is not a "fake antique" replica but a genuine historical and cultural city, initially built in the 43rd year of the reign of Emperor Kangxi of the Qing Dynasty (1704 AD). Having weathered over three centuries, it still retains a relatively complete traditional layout and historical appearance formed during the Ming and Qing dynasties. The town is a fusion of the ethnic customs of the Miao and Tujia peoples and the unique frontier culture of western Hunan. Its status as the hometown of the literary giant Mr. Shen Congwen adds profound cultural depth. Inside the town, crisscrossing bluestone-paved streets and rows of stilted houses lining both banks of the Tuojiang River compose a vivid ink-wash painting where "mountains, water, and town" are intimately connected.

History

Fenghuang's history can be traced back to the pre-Qin period when it was part of the Chu State. However, its prominence as a military stronghold began during the Ming and Qing dynasties. The Ming Dynasty built the earliest brick city walls here, and the Qing Dynasty established a directly-administered subprefecture (Zhili Ting) and significantly expanded the town, making it a crucial command center within the "Frontier Wall" (Southern Great Wall) system designed to control the Miao territories in the southwest. This history endowed Fenghuang with a unique military garrison culture. In modern times, Fenghuang has produced distinguished figures such as Xiong Xiling, the first democratically elected Premier of the Republic of China; literary master Shen Congwen; and renowned painter Huang Yongyu, further enriching its cultural heritage. Although Shen Congwen's famous work Border Town does not directly depict Fenghuang County town, its inspiration and charm are deeply rooted in the local landscape and people, sparking longing for this western Hunan town in countless readers.

Main Attractions

  1. Ancient Town Core Area: Centered around the stilted houses along the Tuojiang River and the network of bluestone-paved lanes. Streets like Dongzheng Street and Wenxing Street are lined with shops, brimming with local life. When lanterns light up at night, the reflection of the ancient town on the river creates a uniquely charming scene.
  2. Tuojiang River Boat Ride: Taking a boat downstream is a classic way to experience Fenghuang's scenery. From the boat, visitors can closely observe the ancient stilted houses on both banks, pass under the Rainbow Bridge, and see locals washing clothes by the river, evoking the feeling of "sailing on emerald waves, traveling within a painting."
  3. Rainbow Bridge Wind and Rain Pavilion: Built during the Ming Dynasty and spanning the Tuojiang River, this is the iconic landmark of the ancient town. The bridge itself is a sturdy stone arch structure topped with a wooden pavilion, combining functions of a bridge, shops, and a viewing tower. Climbing the pavilion offers a panoramic view of both banks of the Tuojiang.
  4. Shen Congwen's Former Residence: Located on Zhongying Street within the ancient town, it is a typical southern-style courtyard house (Siheyuan). The residence displays historical materials, various editions of Shen Congwen's works, and personal belongings, making it a must-visit for literature enthusiasts.
  5. Southern Great Wall (Miao Frontier Wall): Situated about 10 kilometers west of the ancient town, this is a section of the military defense system built during the Ming Dynasty to suppress Miao uprisings. Although not as grand as the northern Great Wall, it winds through the southern mountains, bearing witness to specific historical events.
  6. Ancient Town Museum (Chen Baozhen Family Residence): Located in the town center, it was originally the former residence of Premier Xiong Xiling of the Republic of China era. The museum showcases Fenghuang's history, culture, folk customs, and the history of the Chen Baozhen family (the family of historian Chen Yinke), offering rich content.
