History of West Lake
The history of West Lake can be traced back to the Qin and Han dynasties. When the Northern Song Dynasty poet Su Shi served as the Governor of Hangzhou, he organized laborers to dredge West Lake and used the excavated silt to build Su Causeway, which remains one of the most beautiful landscapes of West Lake today.
West Lake is also associated with many historical figures and legends:
- Legend of the White Snake: The love story of Xu Xian and Lady White Snake meeting at Broken Bridge
- Butterfly Lovers: One of China's Four Great Folktales
- Jigong: A highly revered monk of the Southern Song Dynasty who practiced at Lingyin Temple
