Synopsis

Zhouzhuang is located in Kunshan, Suzhou, Jiangsu Province. Founded in the Northern Song Dynasty, it has a history of over 900 years and is known as China's premier water town. It is a national AAAAA-level tourist attraction and one of the world's top ten most beautiful towns. Within an area of 0.4 square kilometers, there are nearly a hundred classical residences and over 60 Suzhou-style brick archways, with more than 50% of the buildings being Ming and Qing Dynasty-style dwellings. Key attractions include Shen Wansan's Former Residence, Twin Bridges, Zhang Hall, and Shen Hall, while Wansan Pork Trotter and Granny Tea are local delicacies.

Overview

Zhouzhuang, located in Kunshan City, Suzhou, Jiangsu Province, is China's most famous ancient water town in the Jiangnan region, hailed as the "Number One Water Town in China." Founded during the Yuanyou period of the Northern Song Dynasty (1086), it boasts a history of over 900 years. Covering an area of just 0.4 square kilometers, the ancient town preserves nearly 100 classical residences and over 60 Suzhou-style brick archways, with more than 50% of its buildings dating back to the Ming and Qing dynasties. With its whitewashed walls, black-tiled roofs, small bridges, flowing streams, and houses built along the canals, Zhouzhuang perfectly retains the quintessential charm of a traditional Jiangnan water town.

In 1995, Zhouzhuang was designated as a Historical and Cultural Town of Jiangsu Province. It was recognized as one of China's first batch of Historical and Cultural Towns in 2003 and rated as a National AAAAA Tourist Attraction in 2007. Internationally, Zhouzhuang has been listed among the world's top ten most beautiful towns and included in the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List. The renowned painter Wu Guanzhong once praised Zhouzhuang, saying, "Mount Huangshan gathers the beauty of China's mountains and rivers, while Zhouzhuang gathers the beauty of China's water towns." This accolade elevates Zhouzhuang as the supreme representative of China's ancient water towns.

Core Attractions

The Twin Bridges are Zhouzhuang's most iconic landmark. Comprising the Shide Bridge and Yong'an Bridge, two stone bridges connected at a right angle, their arches and reflections form a perfect circle and square. In 1984, the famous painter Chen Yifei created the oil painting Memories of Hometown based on the Twin Bridges. The painting was purchased by American oil magnate Armand Hammer and gifted to Deng Xiaoping, catapulting the bridges and Zhouzhuang to fame and cementing their status as the quintessential image of a Chinese water town.

Shen House is the largest residential complex in Zhouzhuang, built during the Qianlong era of the Qing Dynasty by Shen Benren, a descendant of Shen Wansan, the wealthiest man in Jiangnan. The house features seven courtyards, five gate towers, over 100 rooms, and covers an area of more than 2,000 square meters, representing an outstanding example of Jiangnan residential architecture. Shen Wansan was an immensely wealthy merchant in the late Yuan and early Ming dynasties, reputed to have possessed a "Treasure Bowl" that provided endless gold and silver.

Water Town Ambiance

Life in Zhouzhuang is slow-paced and leisurely. In the early morning, a thin mist floats over the river as elderly residents sit by the banks, drinking tea and chatting. During the day, tourists wander through narrow cobblestone alleys lined with quaint shops. In the evening, the setting sun casts a golden glow on the white walls and black tiles, and the river shimmers with light. At night, red lanterns reflect on the water, transforming the entire town into a living ink-wash painting.

Zhouzhuang's local delicacies include Wansan Braised Pork Trotter (a signature dish from Shen Wansan's family, fatty yet not greasy), Granny Tea (a traditional local tea-drinking custom), Whitebait (fresh river fish from Zhouzhuang's waterways), and Sanwei Yuan (fish meatball soup). Among these, Wansan Braised Pork Trotter is the most famous and is considered a must-try for nearly every visitor.
