Jin Merchant Culture

Pingyao Ancient City is the birthplace and headquarters of the Jin merchants (Shanxi merchants). During the Ming and Qing dynasties, centered in Pingyao, the Jin merchants established a network of exchange shops spanning 9,000 miles across Eurasia, earning the title "Wall Street of China." Rishengchang Exchange Shop, founded in 1823, was the first financial institution in Chinese history specializing in deposits, loans, and remittances, pioneering modern Chinese banking.

At the peak of the exchange shop industry, there were 22 exchange shops within the ancient city, with branches spread across major cities nationwide and extending to countries such as Japan, Russia, and Korea. Exchange shops like Xie Tongqing and Shuang Qingxi were founded here, collectively writing the legend of the Jin merchants' financial empire.

Residential Architecture

The ancient city preserves 3,797 traditional residential courtyards, of which over 400 are well-preserved. Most of these residences are courtyard houses (siheyuan) with clear central axes, symmetrical layouts, and deep courtyards, reflecting the typical style of northern residential architecture during the Ming and Qing dynasties. Famous residences like the Qiao Family Compound and the Wang Family Compound, though not located within the ancient city, share the same architectural lineage as the city's residences.

Protection and World Heritage Application

During the World Heritage application in 1997, the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) described Pingyao Ancient City as "an outstanding example of a Han Chinese city during the Ming and Qing dynasties." The city's layout, architectural style, street scale, and other aspects fully retain the urban planning concepts of the Ming and Qing periods, serving as a living historical witness to Han Chinese cities.

In 2015, Pingyao Ancient City was designated as a National 5A-level Tourist Attraction. The city implements a visitor flow restriction policy, with a maximum daily capacity of 15,000 people, to protect the authenticity and integrity of the ancient city.
