Overview

Jiuzhaigou is located in Jiuzhaigou County, Aba Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture, Sichuan Province, on the northeastern side of Gonggan Ridge in the southern section of the Min Mountains, covering a total area of 720 square kilometers. The scenic area is renowned worldwide for its five wonders: emerald lakes, multi-tiered waterfalls, colorful forests, snow-capped peaks, and Tibetan culture, earning it the titles "Fairy Tale World" and "Earthly Paradise." Jiuzhaigou is a UNESCO World Natural Heritage site, a World Biosphere Reserve, and a National 5A-level Tourist Attraction, attracting millions of visitors each year to witness one of the most beautiful natural wonders on Earth.

Jiuzhaigou gets its name from the nine original Tibetan villages within the valley. The scenic area features 108 alpine lakes (locally known as "haizi" by the Tibetan people). The water in these lakes displays a variety of dreamlike colors such as blue, green, and yellow due to the presence of calcium carbonate and different types of algae, shimmering like gemstones under the sunlight. Autumn is the most beautiful season in Jiuzhaigou, when the colorful forests covering the mountainsides are reflected in the azure lakes, weaving a breathtaking natural tapestry of red, yellow, green, and blue.

Core Scenic Areas

The Jiuzhaigou scenic area consists of three valleys arranged in a Y-shape:

Valley Representative Attractions Features
Shuzheng Valley Shuzheng Lakes, Rhinoceros Lake, Spark Lake Continuous chain of lakes, swaying reeds
Rize Valley Five-Flower Lake, Five-Color Pond, Mirror Lake, Panda Lake Most rich and brilliant colors
Zechawa Valley Long Lake, Seasonal Lakes Largest and deepest lakes in Jiuzhaigou

Five-Flower Lake is the most quintessential attraction in Jiuzhaigou, hailed as a unique wonder of the area. The lakebed features travertine deposits of various colors, combined with different algae growing in the water, causing the lake to display hues like goose yellow, dark green, deep blue, and navy blue in the same area, resembling a giant palette.

Although small in size, the Five-Color Pond is the most color-rich lake in Jiuzhaigou. The water is crystal clear and, under sunlight refraction, presents an extremely pure blue color, like melted gemstones.

Long Lake is the highest-altitude and largest lake in Jiuzhaigou, at approximately 3,100 meters above sea level and about 8 kilometers long. Surrounded by snow-capped peaks, the lake's water is deep and dark blue. In winter, it freezes and is draped in silver, offering a different kind of majestic beauty.

Famous Waterfalls

Waterfall Characteristics
Nuorilang Waterfall China's widest travertine waterfall, about 300 meters wide with a 25-meter drop
Pearl Shoal Waterfall Water flows and leaps over the travertine shoal like scattered pearls
Shuzheng Waterfall Cascades down from above the Shuzheng Lakes, forming a curtain-like water screen

Nuorilang Waterfall is one of the iconic landscapes of Jiuzhaigou, located at the convergence of the three valleys. "Nuorilang" means "male god" in Tibetan, symbolizing grandeur and magnificence. Water cascades down from a cliff covered in forest, forming countless silver water curtains with immense power. Nuorilang Waterfall was also the filming location for the ending scene of the 1986 TV series adaptation of Journey to the West.

Cultural Significance

Jiuzhaigou gets its name from the nine original Tibetan villages within the valley. Tibetan culture is an important component of Jiuzhaigou's cultural landscape. The Tibetan villages within the scenic area still retain traditional architectural styles and ways of life. Stone and wood houses are adorned with colorful prayer flags, prayer wheels spin in the wind, and a strong Tibetan atmosphere pervades.

In 1992, Jiuzhaigou was inscribed on the UNESCO World Natural Heritage List, becoming a globally recognized precious natural heritage site. On August 8, 2017, a magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck Jiuzhaigou County, damaging some of the scenic area's landscapes. After several years of natural recovery and ecological restoration, Jiuzhaigou fully reopened in 2021. The damaged lakes and waterfalls have largely recovered their original appearance, showcasing the astonishing self-healing power of nature.
