Synopsis

Tiger Leaping Gorge is located at the border of Shangri-La City and Lijiang City in Yunnan Province, and is one of the deepest gorges in the world. Here, the Jinsha River cuts through the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain and Haba Snow Mountain, with the gorge reaching a maximum depth of 3,900 meters and the narrowest point of the river being only 30 meters wide. Legend has it that a tiger once leaped across the river at this spot, hence the name Tiger Leaping Gorge.

Overview

Tiger Leaping Gorge is located at the border of Shangri-La City and Lijiang City in Yunnan Province. It is a deep gorge carved by the Jinsha River (the upper reaches of the Yangtze River) between the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain and Haba Snow Mountain. The gorge is approximately 20 kilometers long and is divided into three sections: Upper Tiger Leaping, Middle Tiger Leaping, and Lower Tiger Leaping. With a maximum vertical drop of 3,900 meters, it is one of the deepest gorges in the world. At its narrowest point, the river is only about 30 meters wide, where the water roars and thunders with immense power. Legend has it that a tiger once leaped across the river using a giant rock in the middle, hence the name Tiger Leaping Gorge.

Tiger Leaping Gorge is a paradise for hiking enthusiasts. The High Trail is one of the world's top ten classic hiking routes. Along the way, hikers can admire the magnificent glaciers of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain and Haba Snow Mountain up close and overlook the awe-inspiring sight of the Jinsha River roaring through the valley below. This route attracts outdoor enthusiasts from all over the world.

The Three Sections

Section Features Difficulty
Upper Tiger Leaping Most developed, with boardwalks and viewing platforms, Tiger Leaping Rock in the river Low (Sightseeing)
Middle Tiger Leaping Most thrilling section, dense with waterfalls and rapids Medium (Requires hiking down to the riverbank)
Lower Tiger Leaping Deepest and narrowest part of the gorge, rarely visited High (Requires a guide)

Upper Tiger Leaping is a must-visit for most tourists. Well-developed boardwalks and viewing platforms allow visitors to safely enjoy the spectacular sight of the Jinsha River churning and roaring through the gorge. In the middle of the river lies a giant rock about 13 meters high—Tiger Leaping Rock. Legend says the tiger used this rock to leap across the Jinsha River. Standing on the viewing platform, one can see the river water crashing against the rock from both sides, sending waves several meters high, with a deafening roar.

Middle Tiger Leaping is the most coveted section for hikers. There are no developed trails here; one must descend steep mountain paths to reach the riverbank. Along the way, you can see natural wonders like "A Thread of Sky" and "Sky Full of Stars," and experience the immense power of the Jinsha River up close. The waterfall clusters in Middle Tiger Leaping are a major highlight, with several waterfalls cascading down the cliffs directly into the Jinsha River.

Hiking Route

The Tiger Leaping Gorge High Trail is approximately 22 kilometers long and typically takes 2 days to complete. On the first day, hikers start from Qiaotou (Tiger Leaping Gorge Town), cross the "28 Bends" at an altitude of 2,670 meters, and reach Halfway Guesthouse for accommodation. On the second day, hikers depart from Halfway, pass Guanyin Waterfall to reach Middle Tiger Leaping, and then can choose to continue hiking to Lower Tiger Leaping or return the same way.

The best season for hiking is from October to May of the following year. During the rainy season (June to September), the mountain paths are slippery, and there is a risk of falling rocks, making hiking not recommended. Hikers should be aware of altitude sickness and sun protection, and carry sufficient drinking water and food.

Natural Wonders

The geological structure of Tiger Leaping Gorge is extremely unique. The Jade Dragon Snow Mountain (5,596 meters) and Haba Snow Mountain (5,396 meters) stand facing each other, with the Jinsha River carving a gorge as deep as 3,900 meters between them. This immense elevation difference makes Tiger Leaping Gorge a natural laboratory for studying geological structures and river erosion.

The climate within the gorge changes dramatically with altitude. The valley floor is dry and hot with sparse vegetation; the mountainsides are temperate and humid with dense forests; and the mountaintops are cold with perennial snow. Within a short vertical distance, one can observe a complete vegetation spectrum ranging from subtropical to frigid zones.
