Overview

Jianshui Ancient Town, located in Jianshui County, Honghe Hani and Yi Autonomous Prefecture, Yunnan Province, China, is a national-level historical and cultural city with over 1,200 years of history. The town was initially built during the Nanzhao period of the Tang Dynasty and was anciently known as "Butou" or "Badian." It gradually flourished during the Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasties, earning the reputation as the "Zoulu of Southern Yunnan" and a "Land of Culture and Literature." Compared to ancient towns like Lijiang and Dali, Jianshui Ancient Town has less commercial hustle and bustle, better preserving the authentic atmosphere of local life and its profound historical and cultural heritage. Its core charm lies in its well-preserved ancient architectural complexes, unique ancient well culture, the enduring legacy of Confucian scholarship, and the mouthwatering local delicacies. Strolling along the bluestone-paved roads and wandering through the ancient streets and alleys, one can almost hear the echoes of history.

History

The history of Jianshui can be traced back to the Tang Dynasty. Around 810 AD, the Nanzhao regime built the "Huili" city here, translated into Chinese as "Jianshui," meaning "great sea," due to the extensive water bodies in the area at that time. During the Yuan Dynasty, Jianshui Prefecture was established, with large-scale military garrisons and agricultural settlements bringing advanced culture and technology from the Central Plains. During the Hongwu reign of the Ming Dynasty, the imperial court established the Lin'an Prefecture here and undertook massive construction of the city walls, laying the foundation for the layout of today's ancient town. Concurrently, a large influx of immigrants arrived, and Confucianism flourished. The construction of the Jianshui Confucius Temple marked its emergence as the cultural and educational center of Southern Yunnan. The Qing Dynasty continued this prosperity, with further economic and cultural development leaving behind numerous exquisite residential and public buildings. In modern times, despite undergoing changes, the town's urban fabric and a wealth of precious historical remains have been preserved, making it a living fossil for studying the history, architecture, and culture of China's southwestern frontier.

Main Attractions

  1. Jianshui Confucius Temple: Built in the 22nd year of the Zhiyuan era of the Yuan Dynasty (1285 AD), it is the largest Confucius Temple in Yunnan, second in scale only to the Confucius Temple in Qufu, Shandong, and the Beijing Confucius Temple. Its architectural complex follows strict traditional规制 (guīzhì, layout/design principles), is grand and imposing, and includes all essential structures such as the Lingxing Gate, the Pan Pond, and the Dacheng Hall, reflecting the profound influence of Confucianism in the frontier regions.
  2. Zhu Family Garden: A family residence built by the local gentry brothers Zhu Weiqing during the late Qing Dynasty, known as the "Grand View Garden of Southern Yunnan." It is a large-scale, exquisitely built, and uniquely laid-out private garden in Southern Yunnan, perfectly integrating living spaces with garden art. It is considered a gem of Qing Dynasty residential architecture.
  3. Chaoyang Tower (East Facing Tower): Built in the 22nd year of the Hongwu era of the Ming Dynasty (1389 AD), it resembles Beijing's Tiananmen Gate but was built 28 years earlier. It is the iconic landmark of Jianshui Ancient Town. The three-story tower is majestic and towering, offering a panoramic view of the ancient town from the top.
  4. Examination Cells of the Provincial Education Commissioner: This was the examination venue where the Provincial Education Commissioner of Yunnan regularly held the院试 (yuànshì, a level of imperial examination) during the Ming and Qing dynasties. It is an important physical relic of the ancient imperial examination system, bearing witness to the scholarly aspirations of countless students from the frontier.
  5. Ancient Wells and Tofu: Jianshui Ancient Town is dotted with ancient wells, such as the Daban Well and Ximen Well, known for their clear, cool, and sweet water. The Jianshui baked tofu, made by coagulating soybean milk with this well water, is famous nationwide and is the soul of the town's culinary culture. Watching the tofu-making process and tasting grilled tofu are must-have experiences.
  6. Shuanglong Bridge (Double Dragon Bridge): Located in the western suburbs of the ancient town, it was built during the Qianlong era of the Qing Dynasty. It is named for the two rivers winding like dragons. This is a beautiful 17-arch large stone bridge that blends harmoniously with the natural environment, hailed as the "First Bridge of Southern Yunnan."
