Overview

The Honghe Hani Rice Terraces are located in Yuanyang, Honghe, Jinping, Lüchun, and other counties within the Honghe Hani and Yi Autonomous Prefecture of Yunnan Province, China. They represent a marvel of agricultural civilization created over 1,300 years primarily by the Hani people and other local ethnic groups. They ingeniously utilized the unique local geography and climate, described as "four seasons on one mountain, different weather within ten li." The core area is in Yuanyang County, covering a total area of approximately 1 million mu (about 66,667 hectares), with 170,000 mu (about 11,333 hectares) being contiguous. The terraces follow the contours of the mountains: large fields are carved on gentle slopes, small ones on steep slopes, and even crevices beside gullies and under cliffs are utilized. Thus, some terraces span several mu, while others are as small as a winnowing basket. A single mountainside can often contain tens of thousands of mu, creating a grand and magnificent scale. In 2013, the Cultural Landscape of Honghe Hani Rice Terraces was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, becoming China's 45th World Heritage site.

History

The history of the Honghe Hani Rice Terraces can be traced back to the Sui and Tang dynasties. In the 7th century AD, the ancestors of the Hani people migrated from the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau to the Ailao Mountains and the banks of the Honghe River in Yunnan. For survival, they relied on remarkable wisdom and perseverance to create a sustainable agricultural ecosystem integrating "forests, villages, terraces, and water systems" in mountainous areas with elevations ranging from about 200 to 2,000 meters and slopes up to 75 degrees, utilizing complex water systems and forest ecosystems. Forests at the mountaintops conserve water, villages on the mountainsides provide living spaces, layered terraces are cultivated below the villages, and stream water is channeled through ditches for step-by-step irrigation before finally converging into the Honghe River. This system perfectly embodies the concept of harmonious coexistence between humans and nature. It serves as the material carrier of the Hani people's social, cultural, and spiritual life, and its historical continuity, cultural uniqueness, and ecological wisdom are rare in the world.

Main Attractions

The Honghe Hani Rice Terraces feature numerous scenic spots, with several major viewing areas in Yuanyang County being the most famous:
* Bada Scenic Area: Renowned for its sunset views. Nearly ten thousand mu of terraces are stacked layer upon layer, stretching from valleys at 1,100 meters above sea level to mountaintops over 2,000 meters. At sunset, the water surfaces of the terraces reflect the colorful glow of the sky, creating an extremely spectacular scene.
* Duoyishu Scenic Area: Famous for its sunrise and sea of clouds. This is the best spot for photographing the sunrise over the terraces. In the early morning, when the first rays of sunlight pierce through the clouds and shine upon the water-filled terraces, the sea of clouds, morning glow, terraces, and villages complement each other, resembling a fairyland.
* Laohuzui (Tiger's Mouth) Scenic Area: Once known as the most precipitous and majestic terrace area in Yuanyang, named for its resemblance to a tiger's mouth. Its terraces feature intricate, winding lines with a strong three-dimensional effect. Please note: Due to geological hazard risks, this scenic area has been closed to the public since 2019. Visitors should check the latest official notices.
* Qingkou Hani Ethnic Folk Village: Located within the terraces, visitors can experience up close the Hani people's mushroom-shaped houses, sacred village forests, water-powered rollers, water-powered trip-hammers, watermills, and other production and living facilities. It's a place to feel the Hani folk culture and traditional festivals like "Angmatu" (Village God Worship).
* Aichun Blue Terraces: Near Duoyishu, between 9:00 AM and 11:00 AM, when the sky is clear and blue, the water surfaces of the terraces present a pure blue color, making it a favorite among photography enthusiasts.

Practical Information

The following information primarily pertains to the core Yuanyang Terraces. It is advisable to verify details before traveling.

Item Specific Information
Ticket Combo Ticket (Full-price): 70 RMB (usually includes Bada, Duoyishu, Qingkou Folk Village, etc.). Individual scenic spots also sell separate tickets at varying prices.
Opening Hours Open 24/7 (the landscape itself is open). However, main viewing platforms (e.g., Duoyishu for sunrise, Bada for sunset) have optimal viewing times. It is recommended to arrive before sunrise and leave after sunset.
Best Time to Visit November to April each year, especially January and February. During this period, the terraces are harvested and flooded for maintenance, creating mirror-like water surfaces with optimal light effects. After transplanting seedlings (May-June), the fields are emerald green; before harvest (September-October), they turn golden yellow—each season has its unique charm.
Transportation 1. Self-drive: From Kunming, take the Kunmo Expressway and Yuanman Expressway to Yuanyang, approximately a 5-6 hour drive. Mountain roads within the scenic area are winding; drive cautiously.
2. Long-distance Bus: Take a bus from Kunming South Bus Station to Yuanyang New County Town (Nansha Town), then transfer to local minivans or buses to the Old County Town (Xinjie Town) and various scenic areas.
3. Common Route: Most visitors first reach Kunming, then take a high-speed train to Jianshui or Mengzi, and finally transfer by car to Yuanyang. This route offers more flexibility.
